Brown Fused Alumina
Tough and durable. The industrial workhorse for sandblasting, grinding wheels, and refractories.
- Tough, blocky grain structure with high fracture resistance
- Al₂O₃ content ≥ 95 %, ideal for heavy-duty grinding
- Excellent thermal stability for refractory applications
- Cost-effective alternative to white fused alumina
Overview
Brown Fused Alumina (BFA) is manufactured by fusing calcined bauxite in a tilting electric arc furnace. The tough, blocky grains have an Al₂O₃ content of 95 % or above, combined with small amounts of TiO₂ and Fe₂O₃ that enhance toughness and grain longevity.
BFA is the workhorse abrasive of the industry — widely used in bonded and coated abrasive tools, heavy-duty blasting, and refractory applications where high strength and resistance to thermal shock are required.
YUMO produces BFA in macro grit sizes F12 through F220, with optional calcination and acid washing for specialized applications.

FAQ
What is the difference between brown and white fused alumina?
BFA is tougher and more cost-effective, while WFA offers higher purity and lower contamination. BFA is preferred for heavy grinding; WFA for precision finishing.
Can BFA be used in refractory applications?
Yes. BFA's high Al₂O₃ content and thermal stability make it ideal for refractory castables, bricks, and furnace linings.
What grit sizes are available?
We offer the full FEPA macro range from F12 to F220. Custom mesh sizes (e.g., 8-12 mesh, 16-30 mesh) are also available.
Do you offer calcined or acid-washed BFA?
Yes. Both calcined (for enhanced toughness) and acid-washed (for reduced Fe₂O₃) grades are available on request.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Standard MOQ is 1 MT. Trial quantities can be arranged for qualification.
